The bankruptcy process starts with a meeting with a licensed trustee. In Cambridge Ontario you can call 519-622-3773 to arrange a no-charge initial consultation with one of the professionals from Hoyes, Michalos & Associates Inc. They will start by assessing your situation over the phone; they will then tell you what information you should bring with you to your initial meeting with the trustee (which will include a list of who you owe money to, details on any cars, houses or RRSPs you own, and a list of your typical monthly expenses).
At your first meeting, the trustee will review the process with you. You will have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you want about the bankruptcy process. You will then be given more information to read, and an information form to fill out. We recommend that you read the information on your own, at home, before making the final decision to go bankrupt.
The trustee will then take your information form and create the initial bankruptcy paperwork. A second appointment will be booked for you to review the paperwork and to review the bankruptcy process again with the trustee, and to sign the papers and begin the bankruptcy process.
Once the paperwork is signed, the trustee from Hoyes Michalos & Associates will electronically transmit your bankruptcy information to the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy in Ottawa (a division of the federal government), and your bankruptcy begins immediately.
